HUGE PRICE REDUCTION FOR HOLIDAYS!!!! Antique Bronze Sculpture of Horse with a Groom. Coustou was commissioned to do a series of statues for Louie XIV for the Equestrian Pond at the Chatteau De Marly in France. This series took 5 years ti finish 1740 to 1745 and were the last works completed by Coustou who died in 1746.
I picked this sculpture at a estate sale in the early 1990s in Pasadena Ca. I was a dedicated antiquer in those days and this sale had a lot of MOVIE MGM Hollywood stuff.
The girl I bought it from had a relative that worked for MGM for 30 years. A few items had MGM insignia on them like a MGM parking meter and a cabinet with an MGM insignia. I have seen This sculpture in a few movies.
"Separate Tables" with David Niven and Burt Lancaster and 2 other movies but can't recall their titles right now. The sculpture I saw in the movies was the same size as this one but I cannot say if this particular one was used in films, just makes sense that it probably was given where I got and when. The Sculpture weighs over 20 pounds, stand 19 inches tall, is about 16 in. Long by around 7 in. It is bronze and has green patinia devleoped over most of the piece.
The little square nuts on the studs on the bottom of the piece further testify to its age. These were used as early as 1800, This sculpture is definitley cast in the 1800s, no signature or marking I can find. Excellent condition with no problems.
